Official press release:

That what we see is a riddle. Reality is a one big question. The world delights us and, at the same time, scares us as we do not know how to identify it. Existential horror and admiration alternate; this is how we perceive reality, sometimes not even realizing it. The artist’s task is to look where few choose to.

Art is a way of knowing. As for me, art is a way to find the answer to the existential question concerning the origin and purpose of life. Knowing through art is always a revelation, transformation, admiration, surprise, and a feeling of mystery…

Music often inspires me to create new projects. It may be both classical and modern music. I listen to many genres of music so there is no sense to enumerate all of them. Sometimes I want to listen to the wonderful version of the Requiem by Mozart performed by Ricardo Muti. I like the piano recitals by Prokofiev, with their complex color, amazing tone play, as if you glimpsed the reflections of water glistening on the seabed. And, of course, the 9th symphony by Beethoven in Karayan’s version…

The fourth part should be dynamic, furious, rapid – real vivace flying from infinity to infinity. A feeling arises as if all of life, all its rough relief with black abysses and white sparkling tops is passing before you. And when the choir finally reaches its highest pitch, it’s as if the night sky is singing… it is just unutterable; and that what I feel takes my breath away. This music undoubtedly inspires…

This is how I see creativity:
Art should stimulate thinking.
Quantum mechanics should be connected with Renaissance aesthetics.
The mind and emotions should be used simultaneously.
It is as if a spectator had entered into a force field of strain, experiencing feelings that he could not put into words, when standing in front of a work of art. Let’s say that if a person can express in words what he (or she) feels looking at a work of Art, it means it is not Art.

I think that geometry should be at the foundation of good art. Beauty does not tolerate chaos or scorn. If mathematics is the frame of music, then geometry is the foundation of visual arts (for example, my projects Supersymmetry and Metamorphosis). Art should be intellectual, activate a cognitive ability and, at the same time, stimulate a deep emotional response.

I like to add complementary measurements to works. For instance, in the polyptych Florence, you can see a face if you look at the right part of the polyptych–it is in the shade of the figure. I’ll bet that at first glance, you didn’t pay it any mind. Well, the reason for that is I hid it very well:).

The world is like the Voynich Manuscript: we see something that we can touch but cannot identify. Art is a way to find the answer to the existential question concerning the origin and purpose of life. Most of my works are intuitive. Only after spending some time, I can guess at their internal logic, their deep intensions. In my works, I combine life’s dramatic fragility, the secret of life’s origin and purposes, and delight with its contemplation. Mix delight with the visual world, quantum mechanics, geometry and music and you will get my art.

I would also like to note that, in my opinion, self-expression is a waste of time. It is difficult enough to say why with just a couple words, so let me explain. Everyone is able to express oneself. To do it, you do not need to be good at anything or learn anything. You need not have any skills, make an effort, and so on. The notion of art loses its sense as the criterion becomes very vague. That is why I think that self-expression is not the purpose of art; otherwise, every person might be considered an artist. So what does the artist do? First of all, the artist works a lot and continuously improves his skills.

The artist’s task is to express the world through himself. So, the world that is presented as bipolar in front of us is a priority. On one hand, it attracts us with its beauty, and, on the other hand, it repels us with its mystery, the secret of its origin and purposes, the absence of reference points, its unpredictability and so on. We have a lot of questions and a very few answers. The canvas Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? by Gauguin is the best example of this. The artist should express the world through himself but not himself through the world…

Certainly, art should be unique, individual and inimitable, but it should not become a goal in itself. Individuality appears directly in art and does need to be forced. Intentional forcing of individuality results in mannerism and quickly becomes boring. I think that the artist’s task is to express the world through himself, and the individual style appears directly as an inescapable and natural part of the creativity process.

This is what my art is aimed at: I try to capture beauty by means of geometrical structures and seeing certain regularities. At the same time, I keep in mind the dark side of the world where there is no certainty or clear purpose of existence; where there are only questions and no answers; where the perpetual twilight prevails and the ancient night gods guard the answers…

Art should not only explore the world but it should create new forms. Creativity in its true sense is the creation of something totally new. To my mind, art is a fine balance of world expression, exploration and the creation of something wholly unique. Art is a combination of individual and universal components. Only under these conditions are true creativity, true art, and true enjoyment of perception of a work of art possible.
This is my method and internal intentions of creativity, which are the components of my art.

Thank you very much,
Alex T
