Akshaya Sawant

Artist, Director, Editor

Mumbai, India
With an instinct to play with the cinematic language and form, I explore subjects that are taboo in society and desire to make films that leave the audience thoughtful; since an expression through filmmaking seems to me an act of life as integral as breathing. Social issues disturb me personally, and I often volunteer to create awareness in society: To highlight environmental hazards posed by religious Indian idols being dispersed in the ocean, I cleaned up a beach along with my fellow students. To demonstrate the humanitarian horrors of the 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, I painted a tall city wall. I made street art to showcase the ill effects of smoking tobacco and marched with thousands of people in America for equality, decency and justice for women. And I intend for my films to continue in the same vein. Through Cinema, I want to address issues like climate change, inequality, social injustice and human relationships. I feel a sense of responsibility towards the world I live in, and I feel Cinema gives me a hope that my expression can bring about change.
