Urban Oasis
The creation of an alternative building typology for the promotion of individual health.
A juxtaposition of old and new transform an existing turn ofthe century apartment building into a place of self-discovery. Reflectionbecomes the focus of this spa where a gradient of spatial environmentsstimulate feelings of relaxation and self-awareness. The design of eachenvironment within the facility is meant to evoke various physical andpsychological responses centered on healing.

The existing building features an unassuming entrance to thelush oasis visible through the seamless glass curtain wall of the newconstruction. Directly inside the entrance, the primary reception spacehighlights the atmosphere of the main rectangular volume. The intimate spatialcharacteristics in the existing building contrast the generously proportionedspace within the new construction.

Entering within the excavated bath is the first aspect ofthe spiritual cleansing process. The theme of heavy concrete vaults, softlighting, and warm wood tones intimate the architectural elements of sacredspace. The element of water as a cleansing element of purification is anideological presence in both Eastern and Western sacred spaces.

The soaring wall of bamboo creates a play of dappled lightin the environment labeled “the greenhouse” and is further reflected in theglowing fabric pods suspended from the ceiling. The 60-feet of vibrant greenvegetation screen occupants from the hardness of the city streets beyond thecurtain wall. Below the pods an open floor offers room for group activity.

When weather is fair, treatment may be taken on the rooftopwhile wooden pavilions provide similar functions to the fabric pods.

The restaurant located adjacent to the rooftop treatmentarea provides patrons with instructions on preparation of meals. Guests aretreated to views of the center of Lancastercity visible from this vantage point.
