51 ≠ 28 is a poster I created during the midterm elections in 2022. Upon doing research to find a topic I wanted to discuss with this poster, I discovered that while women make up 51% of the United States population, they make up only 28% of Congress. This poster is meant to call out the shocking disparity between these numbers. Because this was around the time that many abortion bans were going into effect, I wanted to use this statistic to also call attention to the fact that it is largely men making these decisions. This poster is meant to be interpreted in several different ways. It could mean that we need to elect more women to Congress, or it could be taken to mean that men shouldn’t be given the power to make decisions over what women choose to do with their bodies. The woman’s figure was illustrated using Adobe Fresco and Adobe Illustrator. The numbers were handwritten using a large Sharpie and then vectorized in Adobe Illustrator.

The actual size of this poster is 18” x 24”.
