NO ERA PAZ ERA SILENCIO
A reportage of demonstrations in Santiago de Chile in 2019-2020
In the winter of 2019 Tommaso Cherubini encountered the Estallido Nacional in Santiago de Chile, a series of popular demonstrations against caravans, corruption, and inequality. The deployment of military forces by President Sebastián Piñera ushered in a conflict that would leave more than 36 dead and thousands injured. The months of clashes led to a National Plebiscite to draft a new constitution and the election as president of Gabriel Boric, one of the early supporters of the protest that began the demonstrations. The series of photographs aims to immerse the viewer in the surreal atmosphere of the demonstrations of that period, where people of all genders, ages, and social classes took to the streets to make their voices heard and demand their rights.
