For this black and white composition, I started by converting the image to Grayscale. Then I focused on the contrast. I adjusted the shadows and highlights, slightly exaggerating the difference between them. Increasing the clarity was essential to opening up the details of the composition. Then it was about balancing. Not too much shadow, not too much highlight.
For the split tone image at the top, I started by converting the image to Grayscale. Then adjusted the saturation for both the shadows and the highlights. I messed around with the hues for each, but ended up increasing the contrast as with the blackand white image. This made the hues of the shadows and the hues of the highlights more noticable. The image was looking too flat before that. I used the curve panel to give the composition more depth.
