Loose Morals
A contemporary take on Hogarth's work.
This is a project I started at university and intend to develop it even further. It is a modern take on Hogarth's morality issues series of paintings, where I have brought his concept forward through to the modern day. I looked at the issues that surround our modern age and developed them into something that is interactive and engaging in order to get the greatest impact on the audience.
I used real book covers, with titles relating to each morality issue i.e Great Expectations for Addiction. Then replaced the insides with a tactile interior. There are five in total, each one delving into a different moral issue.

This first Moral issue is all about the way in which society relies heavily upon addictions. This particular design shines a light on gambling. You have one choice but two chocolates, one gives eternal life, while the other instant death. Would you risk it all or walk aw
ay?

This book entitled 'Hard, soft and wet' on the outside and remodeled to 'Obsession' inside, looks at the obsession with sex in today's society. I purposely used juxtaposition of a child's activity against such a raw image to highlight the issues surrounding young people being exposed to sex.

This book outwardly titled 'Reflections in a Mirror' and re-named 'Vanity' examines the way in which we as a society are intoxicated with how we look and the desire to constantly change our image. The interactive element involves pulling the 'pull me' tab, revealing to bodies, one natural and one ravished by plastic surgery. The mirror then places the viewer in the position of the choice between the two.

This final book in the series is entitled 'The vows of a peacock' and re-named 'corruption'. It deals with how politics has become a corrupt affair and uses spot the difference as a vehicle for this message. The comparison between the houses of parliament and a riot at a football match shows how there is no fundamental difference between them at all.

The final morality issue I looked into was greed. I decided to use film as the media for this issue as i felt it provided a great stage for the message to be delivered. It illustrates how the western world has been overcome with greed and uses strong images of the third world to help embed that message further.
