Requirements for Surgeons Seeking ABS Certification

A former clinical associate professor at the West Virginia School of Medicine, Dr. Mohammad Salim Ratnani consults for the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in Karachi, Pakistan. A resident of Charleston, West Virginia, Dr. Muhammad Salim Ratnani served as president of his cardiovascular surgery practice and is certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS).

ABS is an independent nonprofit that provides primary and secondary board certifications in surgery and other related specialties. The organization was founded in 1937 and has since certified about 30,000 surgeons. Not all surgeons, therefore, are certified by it.

ABS certification evidences a practitioner’s professionalism and commitment to lifelong learning and delivering the best care to patients. To become ABS-certified, a surgeon must first have a graduate degree from a medical school that’s accredited in the United States or Canada. They must also have completed five years of residency training in an accredited program through which they acquired extensive operative experience and disease management knowledge.

A surgeon who has completed the necessary education and training can apply for ABS board certification. In his or her certification, the surgeon must document his or her operative experience and have the director of the residency training program attest to his or her surgical skills and professionalism. He or she should also have a valid medical license.

Should an applicant meet all these standards, he or she will be admitted to an ABS exam. The surgeon will have to pass both written and oral exams, testing surgical knowledge and decision making, before earning certification. To maintain their certification, surgeons must sit and pass a written exam testing their knowledge of modern surgical practices.
