Dr. Jamie Gottlieb's profile

Common Deviations from Correct Posture

As a spine surgeon with the Denton, TX-based Orthopedic Specialists of North Texas, Dr. Jamie Gottlieb delivers operative, nonoperative, and minimally invasive treatments for patients with diverse spinal conditions. Dr. Jamie Gottlieb specializes in spinal problems caused by age, injury, and incorrect posture.

Proper posture is achieved when the shoulders, spinal column, hips, knees, and feet are vertically aligned. If the body leans too far forward or backward, the spine may move out of its neutral position. Over time, this can cause painful joints and permanent disfigurement. If the pelvic bones protrude, the lower spine may go inward, resulting in the condition called swayback.

Sitting for long periods with the head held forward, such as the position many people hold when they work at a computer, puts pressure on the cervical vertebrae. This can cause the upper spine to curve outward and create a hump-like appearance. These conditions can be treated with physical therapy and/or surgery.
