The Mediterranean Region is home to more than 25,000 plants. Escaping the last Ice Age, these areas harbor their own special kind of habitats. As a result the Mediterranean has a very rich biodiversity and a large number of species that exist nowhere else in the world. More than half are endemic to the region, making the Mediterranean one of the top biodiversity hot spots in the world.
