Commercial Success and Critical Acclaim of AC/DC's Back

Michael (Mike) Melville of Novato, California, serves as regional vice president for Enterprise Rent-A-Car. In his free time, Novato’s Mike Melville enjoys collecting rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia related to bands such as AC/DC.

Since forming in 1973, AC/DC has achieved runaway commercial success, selling more than 70 million albums in the United States and more than 200 million worldwide. A significant portion of these sales came from the album Back in Black.

Over its history, Back in Black has tallied US sales of more than 22 million, making it the sixth-highest-selling album of all time. Released in August 1980, Back in Black peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and remained in the top 10 for 23 weeks.

Opening with the ominous sound of church bells, the album marked the absence of original AC/DC front man Bon Scott, who died the previous February. In his stead, new singer Brian Johnson took the microphone, lending his piercing vocals to such rock ‘n’ roll anthems as the title track and “You Shook Me All Night Long.”

Apart from its commercial success, Back in Black achieved critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone lauding the recording in a 1980 review and placing it at No. 77 on its 2012 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
