“Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist.
Children already know that dragons exist.
Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed."

I was randomly listening to the TV while doing my things, when I heard this phrase.. just like a shout through the background noise.
And I felt it so strongly..
I was a kid again..then an adult..then both..
Every day we face dragons! I know they exist

Why I never remember
  that they can be killed?
Later, searching for the author, I actually discovered it was a modified version of a Chesterton's quotation:

“Fairy tales do not give the child his first idea of bogey.
What fairy tales give the child is his first clear idea of the possible defeat of bogey.
The baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he had an imagination.
What the fairy tale provides for him is a St. George to kill the dragon.”

- G.K. Chesterton, writing the original lines, in Tremendous Trifles, Book XVII: The Red Angel (1909)
When I was little and scared in my bed, hearing sounds or imagining them, seeing shadows I could not even have been able to see in the darkness, frightened.. I should have realized that those terrible figures were not merely terrible, but sublime!! I could have jumped on my bed, bouncing, with fierceness, and admired them closely!!

In fairy tales, side by side with those terrible figures, we can find bright champions in armor, like St. George..
We have protectors!! We have comforters!!!
We should not fear

Now, I'm not a kid anymore.. I'm an adult but I know that 'dragons' still exist, as children know that bad things can happen.

What fairy tales have gifted me, is the knowledge that bad things (bogeys and dragons) exist, but can be removed from our lives, managed and challenged.
By a protector, a bright champion like St. George.
But...
Do I need him now?
I still belive in champions?

I do.. I believe in protectors because I am one.

I can be my own champion
I can fight

I will fight
Defeating Dragons
