REFLECTIONS

This week was actually really slow paced and relaxed but we had a lot of learn. It has been one that was interesting in so many ways and definitely useful in the future.

We started with learning how to take self-portraits. In the past I've created my own small black box to create a mini studio of my own to take studio-like images for my Art O-levels. It really made me reminisce the good old days of making my own mini studio for low key photography when Luke brought in huge styrofoam boards for us to create out own DIY photostudio for portrature. I also had fun taking self-portraits with my friends. We were the last group to take the portraits so by that time, the sun has rose further up in the sky so we really had to shift the boards around to get the correct lighting. It reminded me of my internship days working in a commercial production company. It was definitely way more fun when I'm with my friends.

After we helped each other to take our self-portraits, we moved on to print them out on transparency sheets to somehwhat 'develop' these photos that we've taken onto whichever paper or texture we wanted. These was where we could experiment with layering our prints multiple time as well as experiment with creating distorted prints of ourselves by printing the portrait on a crumpled transparency sheet and transferring the ink to paper. Another method was to transfer the ink using a water bath. It was pretty interesting to see all the failed prints that I have created. You'll see when you look at the works below.

Lastly, we were taught on light painting as well as multiple exposure. The trick behind this technique was the setting of the camera as well as the focal distance. I've seen my seniors in photography club done multiple exposure in the dark and the look really cool and artistic. I have a love hate relationship for light painting since I've done it many times but the results I get are more or less the same. Futhermore it is a photography technique that is really time consuming. If I had the time I would definitely research on more light painting photographers and execute a series of work inspired by them because I've seen a lot of interesting works on the internet.

Overall I had a lot of fun for this week's lesson although after the whole lesson I really didn't have the energy and it was close to submissions for VDA.
CLASS EXERCISE 1: SELF-PORTRAIT
Done together with Beatrice, Francesca and Zhong Wei.
CLASS EXERCISE 2: INKJET PRINTS
Layering blue and red to create a 3d effect.
Original image pressed onto paper using a block paint roller
Crumpled transparency papar before it goes through the printer for printing. Used a textured paper to get the above result.
Using the crumpled transparency again, I pressed it onto normal A4 paper and used a pen to draw over the trnsparency as it is being pressed on the paper. As a result, lines are being seen in the print.
I went to test out the transfering the ink using the water bath and my first result was almost close to nothing. I probably used too much water so the next round I used lesser water.
Nope, still didn't work. Though it still did create a cool ghost effect on the paper.
Still too much water now I look like some spirit.
Another distorted print.
At last I'm beginning to see my hardwork after making so many trips to the washroom.
After this final print I assured myself that it was alright. Even though my self-portrait lost her nose and mouth. I was pretty satisfied with this print after making so many failed ones. It sure was tiring.

PROJECT BRIEF: 3.00 a.m.

3.00 a.m., is an experimental project consisting of a series of multiple exposure photography in low light. Inspired by Gjon Mili, this project aims to express how the photographer feels at 3.00 a.m., the time where the body is most vulnerable and weak.
Luke taught us multiple exposures during lessons but he only taught it very briefly so I decided I should explore this technique a little more.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCESSES
I mainly used another camera's flash to create multiple exposures. How this works was once I was comfortable with the position of the subject, I faced the camera's flash towards the subject and snap a picture.
