A poetic film about sexual abuse within safe spaces through the use of archival and existing footage from films and stock videos.
The mode was inspired by Bill Nichols's description of poetic documentary in his book 'Introduction to Documentary' in which he says, “The poetic mode has many facets, but they all emphasize the ways in which the filmmaker's voice gives fragments of the historical world a formal, aesthetic integrity peculiar to the film itself.” (Nichols 105). In my film, I wanted to combine two drastically different types of ‘found footage’- the commercially produced film and home videos from the 1930s to the 1960s. The common link between the two was the portrayal of families. However, the underlying theme is sexual abuse within safe spaces, ones that never reach an extremity that is rape or brutal violence but nevertheless, is abuse hidden within homes, kept secret for many years.
