Analytics Product Design for CDN Optimization Company

Project Role
Hired as a contract Senior Product Designer to design the customer experience for a new customer facing analytics product. I led a small team that include the Head of Product, the Product Operations Manager and myself to complete the research and design phase of the product life cycle.
Tasks: card sorting, user surveys, stakeholder interviews, sketchboarding, wireframes, prototypes, UI kit, Jira documentation
Challenge
The product is for a video analytics company, that optimizes CDN (Content Delivery Network) performance and improves financial efficiency based on the business rules of the user. The company needed a customer facing dashboard to help visualize, and validate the products value by sharing performance data with its customers. Additionally, they needed an administrator experience for technical officers to manage essential functions.
Card Sorting Exercise
To reduce complexity, the first thing we needed to do was to figure out how to tell a story using all of the metrics at our disposal. We began by taking all of the metrics and available data points and grouping them into value categories that the company says it provides.
User Needs Survey
Based on the groupings from the card sorting exercise, we used those grouped metrics to write user needs statements. We then tested these needs statements with different user segments to determine which metrics the user found the most value in knowing. In another exercise, the highest need statements were prioritized against the difficulty of implementation to help determine what would be built and displayed first.
Sketching & Concept Development
Worked with subject matter experts to sketch and visualize the product experience in remote design studios using low fidelity pen and paper.
Resulting concepts were then presented back to internal stakeholders as wireframes for feedback and then tested with a small group of customers. We tested a twitter style notification feed, horizontal vs. vertical navigation and dashboard comprehension. Final screens, a prototype, UI Kit and Jira documentation were the final deliverables.
Visual Design Process
I leveraged the existing customer brand standards to create a product identity that was meaningful and expansive. We initially explored two navigation models, as well as a light and dark interface versions.
Testing Prototypes
I used a clickable prototype to document progress throughout the iterations, and to test concepts with stakeholders and customers. The customer feedback as well as the requirements of the admin interface, drove the final design decisions of both the dashboard and admin experiences.
UI Kit & Jira Documentation
All of the final assets were documented in a UI Kit and output to Zeplin for easy use and access to the development teams. User stories were detailed in Jira to document the required functionality as the team shifts into the final phase of the products release.
