This project was developed for a competition witch challenged the participants to develop a chair for the purpose of watching television, that could easily fit in any living room. I aimed for a solution that could adapt to most of the possible contexts of the action of watching television, turning it into a modular-flexible solution.

First, I needed to study the situation and environment involving people, different objects used for seating and relaxing, and television.

I deduced that the action of watching television was an experience that invited the user to enter into “another world” designated by the television program. And so, for this purpose the television can communicate with the user by hearing and sight. However, the user also feels touch, taste, and smell, and these senses can be important for the activity in terms of relaxation, or other activities the user might be doing while watching television, making them all essential for a proper use of the television.

After a short analysis of the communication between the television and the user, I gathered some of the different contexts and situations that might be possible while watching television.

Considering the big amount of different contexts that might be possible for watching television, I thought that a modular seat could respond to more situations. Inspired by the beanbag, the idea started from a pile of pillows, giving them form and order to create an organized pad.

The cloth with Velcro makes it possible to turn and change the order of the different segments, and so, construct a significant amount of possibilities. By combining 4 of these sets of pads, we can make lots of alternative seat possibilities.
