Motion Graphics: The Case of Wicked Problems

In this group motion graphics project, we are required to conceptualise, script, storyboard, design, and animate a 2-4 minute infomotion video. The theme of this infomotion is design philosophy. Through it, we need to engage in complex research to find an engaging, descriptive, and comprehensive way, making an otherwise convoluted subject accessible. The project requires us to strategically conceptualise, research, and execute a visually stimulating video presenting interconnected ideas by means of a seamless, well-constructed narrative. Since it is a reference-based piece, we are also required to cite all sources consulted.

For our video we decided to focus around the subject of wicked problems. Owing to the complex nature of these phenomena, we decided the best way to explain it would be through a case-study. This case-study investigates a real-life event that shocked the world a decade ago, and continues to influence our decisions and awareness towards the importance of environmental responsibility and the dangers of fossil fuels. The Deepwater Horizon disaster is universally known as one of the most catastrophic oil-spills in human history. Investigations into the disaster uncovered an endless web of interconnected factors that all contributed to the spill. The Deepwater incident therefore needs to be viewed intersectionally, making it a wicked problem. In our video, we unpack the events and instigators around the disaster, serving to show this very intersectionality of factors in order to illustrate how wicked problems form, and how they should be viewed.
