BRIEF

Design and create a campaign to engage people in debate, and ultimately go against the issue of the Badger Cull.

The concept, characters and game design were visualized from scratch during a three-week university group project titled 'Stance'

APPROACH

Research at the Animal Conservation University Campus was undertaken initially, with information and viewpoints gathered from research online, in newspapers/magazines, and from people educated in the area of wildlife management

RESEARCH

It is not completely known how to deal with Bovine TB and there are scientific arguments on each side of the debate.

Solutions include vaccination (too expensive), culling (not proven), or increased biosecurity and better husbandry.

The best estimate would be a 16% reduction of TB over nine years through the culling of 70% of the badger population.

Despite this, only 15% of badgers are said to be infected and the cull would be untargeted.

GAME

The facts and figures are very blurred and inconclusive so we decided to engage people in the debate rather than just feed them with statistics in a traditional ‘no’ campaign.
The App games market is vast and reaches a huge variety of unexpected categories in the population.

Badgers is an interactive game that is downloaded for free on Smartphones and also imbedded within website banners and adverts.

The aim of the game is to kill as many infected badgers as fast as possible. There is no way of telling which are infected and in this way the national untargeted cull is compared to a thoughtless game. Only at the end of the game will it be revealed that there is more depth to the topic, and the viewer is encouraged to sign a petition.

CAMPAIGN

The campaign is ongoing, with advertising replaced after a month of the game being on the marketplace.

There is scope to also feature interactive large scale versions in city squares to engage a large audience
