Low Cost Shelter

Background and Design Opportunity :
Rajasthan, in western India, can get really hot and dry with temperatures varying between 40ºC–48ºC.
Job sites, far from villages, are often rough and rocky, with dry patches and sparse vegetation. Villagers walk long distances everyday from their homes to job sites along with their families, which often include young children and older members. Men and women work together while the older members of the group stay and tend to the little children and take care of other activities such as getting water, serving food, etc.

It is here that a design opportunity was found to design an affordable, portable, durable, collapsible shelter for these migrant villagers.
Design Brief :
To design a temporary, lightweight, portable and low-cost shelter for villagers working on site in
Rajasthan.

Ideation
The Concept :
A tetrahedral collapsible shelter inspired by the collapsible walking stick and the slide lock mechanism used to lock the legs of plastic tables in place by the Indian Railways
