The U.S.B Project
Client:           Self

Brief:             To create a flash drive that improves it’s usability and feasibility  for the education sector

Description:  As a self Directed project I wanted to redesign a flash drive for the education sector. However
through the project the concept changed completely into an add-on for flash drives that allowed the
user to use, as an intermediate device between a laptop and a recorder. Had I been stuck to my
first idea I would have ended up just making another pen drive. This project taught me to be open
                     to change.
Target Audience:
-Education sector needs transfer of data that is much larger than the Email attachment size.
-Cloud systems are still very new and will take at least 5 - 10 years to be as popular.
-Students are one of the largest group of audience that use flash drives and are ready to try new inventions and technologies.

Research:
-The number of USB ports on the system (Laptop) are not enough.
-Orientation of the flash drive (while plugging into a PC) is not clearly marked and even if it is every flash drive is different.
-Flash drives protrude out of the laptop and easily get pushed & disconnected.
-The connector is simply soldered onto the circuit board. This is a stress point and may break with rough use.
-There is no clear indication of “Data transfer complete”.
-The size of data transfer is around 2GB to 10GB. (Movies, Music, PDFs, Books, Notes, Software, Games, etc.)
