Crosswords are better than brain games

Solving crosswords can prove better than playing brain games?

No one can deny that brain keeps on aging with time. But there are ways that can help you to keep your brain as nimble as that of a college student. There are several tools that can sharpen your mental health and reduce the ageing of your brain.  You can easily find several websites, apps and video games that are specially designed to sharpen your mental function.  Some game developers claim themselves better than others and also offer money back guarantee on their products.  Can people trust these products? Well, the answer seems to be complicated, and researchers seem to have different set of opinion about the same.

Adam Gazzaley’s NeuroRacer

University of California’s researcher Adam Gazzaley and his team made it in headlines during September 2013 when their study about brain training games was published in Nature magazine. Their research suggests that specially designed video games can actually manage to improve individual’s mental condition up to certain extent.
Not just improvement in brain’s performance, but these games can also play an important role in dealing with autism, dementia, and ADHD like issues in the future.

The researcher has also developed brain training game along with his team. This game is called NeuroRacer, and Gazzaley recommends this game to people in-order to improve their cognitive control. The game has been designed in such a way, that whenever players improve their performance, the game automatically increases difficulty level. To put it in simple words, game always remains full of surprises and new difficulties for players.

Can users trust these brain training games?

Georgia Institute of Technology’s Memory lab’s investigator Randall W. Engle recently shared his opinion about brain games. He highlighted the point that these days, people are eagerly waiting to try their hands on something that can help their brain to perform better. There are several games and other products available in the market that claim to improve mental fitness. However, there is no solid evidence that can help in measuring improvement in mental fitness of individuals who used these games.
Researcher Ursula Staudinger from the Columbia University shares similar opinion. During her interaction with journalists, she pointed out that individuals playing games can show improvement in their performance after some time, but, not because their brain starts performing better. The improvement can be the result of performing the same task again and again.

Solving crosswords is better than playing games?

This may sound weird, but according to results for survey conducted by Chevrolet Car Company for financial purpose in 2009, Brits preferred solving crossword puzzles to spend their time. Around 86 percent of the survey's participants shared their opinion that solving crossword puzzles was better than playing games. People also shared their opinion that it helps them to improve their general knowledge, and increase their vocabulary. People in Britain consider it as best form of entertainment.
As mentioned earlier, there is no strong evidence to support the impact of games on brain. However, unknowingly, almost every one of us has stimulated our brain by solving newspaper crossword puzzles at-least once. Perhaps, that was one of the most preferred forms of entertainment before the arrival of smart phones.

Journalism met puzzles for the first time in December 1913. Editor Arthur Wynne published crossword puzzle in his newspaper called New York World in-order to fill-up some empty space. The paper decided to continue printing puzzles due to its popularity among readers. Later, several other newspapers from around the world followed New York World’s footsteps. Supercryptic, cryptic and quick are three types of crosswords published in most of the papers. Even after 100 years crosswords manage to give tough competition to recently launched brain games.

From kids, to senior citizens. Everyone can sit with pencil, paper and start solving puzzles. Besides educational benefits and improving logical answering skills, it can also help kids to improve their spellings. Once you start solving puzzles on a daily basis, you would definitely experience improvement in problem solve skills. It also develops "can do" attitude and patience among individuals. Most importantly, puzzles are available free of cost in newspapers and on websites. You don't have to invest much of money to buy them, as in-case of brain training games. So, all that you need to do is dedicate few minutes of time from your daily schedule.
