So Tell Me About Yourself

I have been working as a Communication and Marketing professional for nearly 25 years, with a strong focus in digital, social media, public relations, and events.
My creativity stems from spending my high school years writing short stories and poetry, photographing unusual objects in nature such as patterns in the sand, hunting for treasures at a flea market, and perusing old book stores. I was a typical non-conforming teen, listening to Dylan and reading JRR Tolkein while others were reading Judy Blume and listening to pop music.
My large family has deep Texas roots. My heroes include my grandparents, who were hard working farmers, ranchers, and teachers. My fraternal grandmother followed my grandfather in their early years as he helped build highways with Zachry Construction. Every night she had fresh baked bread from a small brick oven outside their tent, which she had to pack up every few weeks as the highway progressed. My paternal grandmother was a teacher, sharing that life is like “A Barrel of Monkeys” – that we must grab the hand of those in front of you, while reaching back to grab the hand of those behind you. They instilled in me that history connects us, making our present a gift.
Family members shape us, and my shape for was non-conforming. After a few years of laissez faire living, I finally grew up, becoming employable, preferring the non profit arena. It was there I met my mentor who taught me never stop learning, that every mistake is an opportunity for improvement. She encouraged me to use my writing and creativity in connecting people to organizations through sharing stories, using imagery to “show rather than tell.” Thanks to her, I returned to college in 2004, earning my BA in Communication from UTSA, graduating with honors May 2008.
Combining my life experiences, career knowledge, and education makes for a great fit with any organization. I easily transition from working independently to being part of a team, and never say, "I don't know," but instead, "Let me find out how." In fact, there are two quotes I set my life by. The first is "Ancora imparo” Italian for “Yet, I am learning,” often attributed to the great Renaissance genius, Michelangelo. The second is by the wise Yoda, “Do or do not. There is no try.” I look forward to every day, wondering what I will learn and how I will do it.
