Happy Black History Month!

 

I finally got around to doing my black history research. I wanted to find some more obscure figures I'm not familar with. After some digging I found Edmonia "Wildfire" Lewis, and E. Simmons Campbell.

A sculptor and an illustrator respectively.

Edmonia Lewis was an African American/Native American fine arts sculptor who worked in Marble. I was suprise to find out I've actually seen her work before. Replicas of some of her Native American pieces are in Crystal Bridges Art museum in Arkansas.

E. Simms Campbell was the first African American cartoonist published in nationally distributed slick magazines. Though he was featured in several magazines Most of his work was for Esquire.
