On Job Search and Interview

In job searching, the first step is to determine one’s own potentials and interests.
This is to avoid wasting time in looking for the endless possibilities and job opportunities
after graduation. The key is not to send as numerous applications as the person
possibly can but to send the applications to the most appropriate companies or
agencies in line with one’s personal skills and interests. The person must focus on
where he or she wants to go so that people can also help him or her find a good job.
After which, the person can also make a checklist of the types of work he or she wants
to apply. If the person finds a hard time doing this, he or she may consult with the
guidance counselor in order to ask for a clearer direction towards his or her goals.
The next step is to find the appropriate work company. There are many ways to
look for a job. The easiest and fastest way to do this is to surf the internet. Most, if not
all, of the companies can now be looked up online. Another one is to do networking.
Networking, as in finding as much connections as the person has. This does not often
mean going to job search seminars and talking to strangers. This also means getting in
touch with the people he or she know, and interacting with new people who might
possibly have the same interest as the person because most employers hire workers
who they know rather than going for a complete stranger. Another way of looking for a
job is to get in contact with the person’s alumni. This could be a good way of finding
new opportunities in a place the person is already familiar with. If he or she is lucky and
skilled enough, the alumni might also refer him or her to vacant positions in other
companies.

Now, it is time to put everything into action and send the application forms with all
his or her resumé and other supporting documents to his or her chosen companies.
Generally, companies give the applicant a schedule for interview or examinations. In
this time, it is very important that the person can be contacted anytime and anywhere.
Once the person gets the chance to be interviewed, there are also several things
he or she should follow before, during and after the interview. Before a job interview, it
would be very helpful to read some materials about the background of the company
such as their mission and vision. It is also helpful to carefully read the job description
and re-evaluate one’s self to see if he or she is willing and fit to do the job. He or she
may also go over and practice answering some of the possible questions during the
interview. If he or she is set, then it is also important to prepare what to wear on the
interview. Follow the dress code of the company if given one or prepare a smart casual
attire. One must make sure that he or she does not cram on the things he or she must
wear and the requirements he or she must bring on the day of the interview.
When the day of the interview comes, the person must be punctual or better yet
be at the venue earlier than the scheduled time. This is to help him or her get familiar
and comfortable around the place, thus, lessen nervousness and tension. Avoid
overthinking. When it is his or her time to be called, he or she should always greet the
staff who he or she might bump into. Upon entering, greet also the interviewers, and it is
encouraged that the person smile and be positive all throughout the interview. Once the
interview starts, make sure to answer the questions with confidence yet in a polite and
humble manner. Answer briefly too and avoid talking about unnecessary things. When
the interview is finished, exit quietly and thank the interviewers before leaving.
After the interview, the person should always be available and ready in case he
or she gets the job. Keep a positive attitude about the interview. Usually, it will take a
week before the company contacts their applicants. If they still have not contacted after
a week, the person may wait a few days more before contacting the company. If
everything seems to have been in his or her favor, it is always important to remember to
be the responsible and hardworking employee and be an asset in the company, and
also, to enjoy the work.
