BRIEF
This project offers the opportunity to examine and identify cultures existing within the Singapore context. Commissioned to design a cultural center to house and celebrate the culture of choice, the chosen site of the project will also support the design strategy base on contextual considerations. It is imperative to define the culture and its significance to particular groups and people who embraces it as well as its impact on other people who don’t.
SITE CONTEXT
The Telok Ayer sub-district features shophouses of the Early, Transitional, Late and Art Deco Shophouse styles. By 1835, Telok Ayer boasted trading houses, emporiums and religious buildings. Telok Ayer was the original coastline until 1843. Trading junks, slave traders, Telok Ayer Street was the main commercial and residential thoroughfare in Singapore. To create more space, the bay was filled in and the area now known as Shenton Way was built.

“Everything has a potential use or value, striving to preserve culture and history through the process of upcycling. This gives new life to the old and unwanted.”
