On the basis of trauma theory, this paper analyzed these female trauma images in the novel from three aspects - domestic violence, patriarchal society and wartime atrocity, with the view to reveal Amy Tan's perception and interpretation of the forgotten history as well as her observation and attention of female fate. In Polyandry and Chinese Wife-Selling in Qing Dynasty China: Survival Strategies and Judicial Interventions Matthew Sommer shows that to understand the lives and marriages of the poor who comprised the majority of China’s inhabitants we must instead set aside assumptions about normative behavior and turn our attention to what poor couples did to survive. In Chapter I, a brief introduction of the trend and subject of the contemporary Chinese-American literature, the historical background of the novel and the definition of the three core elements-power, gender and culture are offered. After debut of "The Joy Luck Club", Chinese American female writer Tan En-mei published her second novel "The Kitchen God's Wife", which also won the American mainstream readers favourable comment. My research ultimately finds that through the conflicts and reconciliations between two heterogeneous cultures, which is presented as those between mother-daughter and husband-wife relationships, as the theme of the novel, Amy Tan bridges at first glimpse the seemingly independent and incompatible cultures and demonstrates the possibility of coexistence of heterogeneous cultures. The Kitchen God's Wife is the second best-selling works of Chinese-American female writer Amy Tan.
