Bath salts, or synthetic cathinones, are stimulant drugs that are chemically related to cathinone, a substance found in a natural stimulant, the khat plant. They belong to a group of drugs known as new psychoactive substances (NPS), which are drugs that are intentionally created to imitate the effects of controlled drugs.

Bath salts are commonly used in place of MDMA, and come in the form of a brown or white crystalline powder. They can produce effects of paranoia, hallucinations, increased friendliness and sex drive, and excited delirium. Bath salts can be addictive and result in negative health effects such as raised heart rate and blood pressure, chest pain, dehydration, or even death. Much is still unknown about these drugs and how they affect the brain, and there are no medications available that can treat addiction to them. Addiction is usually treated with behavioral therapy.
