What Is Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy?

His interests in the field include various psychological therapies including REBT.

REBT, or rational emotive behavior therapy, is a form of psychotherapy that helps individuals reassess their irrational beliefs. Established in the 1950s by clinical psychologist Albert Ellis, REBT focuses on three basic steps. First, one must identify their irrational beliefs. Such beliefs can be triggers that result in psychological distress. For example, phobias are commonly treated with REBT.

Upon identifying irrational beliefs, one needs to challenge them. This step requires the assistance of a therapist who helps people confront their mistaken beliefs. The third and final step is insight and change. Once irrational beliefs are identified and challenged, one gains insight into themselves and their way of thinking.

Additionally, the therapist examines the associated feelings and behaviors which accompany irrational beliefs. By changing those behaviors, an individual can gradually overcome their irrational beliefs and replace them with healthier ones based on a more accurate picture of reality.
