Three Hiking Areas in Western New York Worth Exploring

Keith W. Pillich, an EHS specialist and manager at Vlado Engineering, lives in Amherst, New York, a suburb of Buffalo. Outside of performing EHS processes around the world, Keith Walter Pillich enjoys spending time outdoors and is particularly fond of hiking. Following are several noteworthy hiking spots near Buffalo:

1. The Eternal Flame at Chestnut Ridge
Tucked away in the Chestnut Ridge County Park, the Eternal Flame is a natural gas leak that is behind a waterfall. A fairly easy hike, the flame is reachable via a small trek up a ravine. The trail is also accessible just past the park coming from Buffalo and takes hikers upstream along a small creek.

2. Knox Farm State Park
A 633-acre park, Knox Farm is full of wildlife viewing opportunities, along with horseback riding and cross-country skiing options. Located just outside of East Aurora, the park is full of trails through forests and rolling meadows that are perfect for hikers of all ages and experience levels. There are also several guided nature walks available at the park.

3. Niagara Gorge
Both challenge-driven climbers and scenic hikers find something at Niagara Gorge. The area houses the Whirlpool Rapids Trail, a difficult hike that places hikers right next to the Niagara River Rapids, along with the easier Devil’s Hole hike or the Rim Trail. Any option rewards hikers with fantastic views of the river and surrounding flora.
