Thread Magazine

I admit it, I'd addicted to magazines. They are awesome. So much information jam-packed into monthly printings. Awesome cover art. Cool packaging and printing techniques. Shit, some of theme even lack content but they still look amazing. Well, why not start my own? That's what I was thinking when I designed this magazine, a fashion magazine focusing on custom apparel. I don't currently have the means to produce or publish something like this but one day I hope to. My idea was to have the cover be plain white (aside from title and copy) with the same t-shirt shape die cut on every one, then, depending on the issue, change the picture behind it. For example, this issue has a picture of a city behind it. I included some other ideas I had for the masthead, (title) just to give some perspective on my creative approach.

Squarepusher Album Idea

Did this back in school, we were asked to make a cover, back, and tray inset for an artist of our choice. Being one of my personal favorites, (I play bass and he RIPS it) I decided to make up an album and art for him. I got the inspiration partly from the name of the artist, (duh) the rest came to me as I was listening to his album Ultravisitor. It's very spontaneous and almost geometric sounding, which led me to create the design based on squares.
Not endorsed in any way by Squarepusher or Warp Records.

Time Flies

Sometimes the oddest things are inspiring... I was having an extremely slow day at the office and found myself staring at the clock, watching time pass. I got this idea, and before I knew it, time had flown away :)

OBTA

This piece, while not chosen for the final design, was created for the Ohio Business Teachers Association. There was a contest between students to design a logo for a convention they hold annually to promote business and technology education. I wanted to create a visually appealing mix of stereotypes cast upon the topics of teaching and business & technology. I used the apple to symbolize the teaching aspect of it and put the tie on it to tie (no pun intended) the business and technology fields in. The overall result is an apple 'wearing' a tie, ready for business.

Soul doodle

One of my all-time favorite activities is doodling. While the word itself is really stupid, (say it a couple of times out loud, preferably away from your friends/family, as they will no doubt assume that you have gone mad) it is the key to breaking that god forsaken creative block we all run into at (the worst) times. Sometimes I even doodle to the point where it grows into a full-fledged drawing, such as this one here, of one of my favorite words out there. Why soul? I do not know. Possibly because that is my main source of caloric intake day by day :) Done with pen and pencil on sketch paper.

Disco is Dead

Another 'mock' music piece, I created this for a metal/grindcore show that doesn't actually exist, but should. I wanted to create a real battle between feelings, like the music does, through typography. So I used very intense type for the titles and then I kept it very prestigious for the rest of the copy. I feel that it creates a good amount of contrast just through the type alone, which is good, because musically these bands are almost always intense but if you listen deep enough it's not always as 'angry' as it seems. That's the funny thing about heavy music in general to me - I think a lot of people mistake passion for anger, which, unfortunately for them, draws them away from this type of music.

Earthtones

Another 'mock' music piece, this one is for a hip hop event called Earthtones. I love this piece for a lot of reasons, the main one being that it strays from the norm in this genre. Most hip hop design consists of so much urban imagery, which isn't a bad thing as that is what is depicted in a lot of the music, but I personally feel like there is more to it than that. So I decided to fuse the earth, with it's deep roots and steady growth, with the music that I feel echoes those very things.
RIP J DILLA <3

For the Love of Money

Plain and simple, this is one of those songs that never gets old. Whenever I am doing a piece that involves music I try to listen to the song(s) a couple of times to get the feel of things. So, it only seemed fitting that, when I decided to do a little tribute poster for For the Love of Money by Bone Thugs n Harmony, $ is what I chose :)

Autechre Album Idea

I love album artwork. It's a great way to pull you even deeper into the music, and if done correctly, can reverberate the feeling from the music into artwork. That was the idea in this mock cd booklet I did in school. Autechre is really mentally stimulating music to me; very arrhythmic but at the same time one can find order in it. When I listen to them, I almost feel like I'm floating along aimlessly underwater, like the jellyfish portrayed in the artwork.

Sometimes I wish the Night would never end...

We've all been there: You have a great night out with your pals and just can't stop smiling. Everyone is laughing, having a good time. It gets later and later and over time people leave and go their separate ways. Eventually, it's just you again, the way it began. Don't you just wish the night would never end sometimes? This is my take on it, coincidentally created at the end of one of those nights.
