When I first became interested photography, I didn't have anyone else that was immediately available to work with as a model, and I didn't want to impose my unknowledgeable self on friends & family until I had a better understanding of my camera and the composition of portraits.
After learning the basics and working on composition, I decided to try my hand at photographing others, but found it difficult to communicate to them what it was I wanted them to do. With self portraiture, I know what the photographer wants me to do, and my model takes direction without me having to give it, plus I'm a model who is around a 2:00 am if I need her.
I have also found a realistic sense of self identity through self portraiture. I no longer have a misunderstanding of my own body image, I can't fool myself into thinking I have a better body than I do, and I also don't imagine things worse than they really are. I have been doing daily self portraits for nearly 4 years now, and it has taught me how to carry myself and possition myself for the most flattering look not only in phtography, but in daily life as well. I have brought this knowledge into a portraiture practice for others as well, but still find the most satisfaction from the self portraits.
