About Me
Steve Carty has been making pictures for a living since 1992. He was born in the great white north and lives in Toronto with his wife, 2 kids and 2 dogs. Daily he commutes by bike to his studio.
His images have been featured in magazines such as; Nuvo, Vervegirl, Naked Eye, Antenna, Scratch, Sway, Polysh, Intersection UK, Jane, ELLE Canada, TChad, InTouch Weekly, Girlfriend (US & New Zealand), YM, Maclean’s, the Source, Fashion18, Saturday Night, Pound, Foto Pozytyw (Poland) and more. Clients have included: Nike, CBC, Blast Radius, L’Oreal Professional, Expect Theatre, Dedicated Clothing, Code Black Entertainment, Universal Music, Smirnoff, Adidas, Reebok, Sport Chek, McClelland and Stewart, Harper Collins, Magnolia Store, Paper Denim & Cloth, Third Rail and many more.
Carty’s images have been in numerous exhibitions including being featured at Contact, May 2010, "Lightworkers" exhibit at the Baitshop. Lifecycles Custom Bike Show and Photo Exhibit, June 2010. Contact 09, “3 Generations of Urban Portraiture” featuring Carty, Jamel Shabazz and Che Kothari. Contact 08, “Tattoo Pin-Up” featuring Carty and Caitlin Free, both shows at the Jerome Jenner Gallery in Toronto. 2004, Kuumba Sees – Harbourfront Centre, Toronto. 2002, Hip-Hop Immortals, the largest exhibition of hip-hop photography in the world [London/Berlin/Paris]. 1999, Naked in the House I, and his first show, Positives (solo show, Bravo! CityTv) in 1996.
This year for Contact 2010, “The Medium is the Message” was the theme and Carty was selected as a featured artist along side the Hermann & Audrey family. Carty’s theme was “Lightworkers” Painters with Light, a slow shutter technique he has been working on for the past 5 years.
Carty currently works in Toronto, New York and Vancouver and has released his first book, "Positives" (spring 2009). He was selected to be published in Carte Blanche, the first book of Canadian Contemporary Photographers, available everywhere. He is currently branching out with Directing Fashion Films and Music Videos.
