DIVINA

DIVINA wireless network dowse tool

Wireless networks ( particularly, those with a free access) are modern “gateways” , where devices such as laptops and smart-phones enable us to retrieve an immense amount of information at ad incredible speed, making the space around us an astonishing new dimension.

Despite the enormous importance these networks have, there are two cardinal issues in accessing them:
' their invisibility
' their strategic location

The Divina Project does just this, it detects wifi spots thanks to built-in hi-range sensors. Its second feauture allows it to expand the network by amplifying the signal. This turns useful when a large amount of these devices are doing it in a crowded area.

In projecting a digital device where the interaction with the user becomes essential, paying attention the the product affordance is crucial. for this reason it is important to find in the collective imaginary a figure which is able to create a strong metaphor of this quest for wireless networks.
In the ancient times, when water was a less affordable good than today, men have been putting their trust in a very peculiar figure, that of the dowser: he would search for water with a wand, to which paranormal powers were given. The dowser can be a perfect example to represent the contemporary man looking for the spring of information.
In this particular case then, the dowser wand becomes a metaphor and an inspiration in the planning of the device.
Divina has LEDs on its body, so that when it’s turned on it automatically start searching for a wireless hotspot. When pointed in the right direction LEDs will turn on, accordingly to the distance from the source. When the devices reaches the place (letting the user navigate with his laptop/smartphone) it turns into an antenna pushing further the signal.

Look@MI

This is a market stand designed for the City of Milano. Its main aim was to create an object that could be functional while used (without forcing expositors in closed spaces) but also decorative and providing informations when not used.
It's made by an aluminium structure and a glass window containing images.
It also has a sort of umbrella to define the seller's space and to prevent the goods to get wet when raining.
This work won the selections in order to be produced and got exposed in Milan's Vittorio Emanuele gallery.

FINN_alcantara extraordinary everyday travel

Finn is an Alcantara cover which goes beyond the mere function of protecting your dearest book: it accompanies you in your daily journey, tightening the relationship between you and the novel you are carrying. The cover is extremely adaptable to different book sizes thanks to magnetic clips that allows you to adjust it, making it a very versatile object.

Finn's peculiarity though is found in its material. The textile makes the pattern appear only if used, creating a strong emotional bound between the reader and the book: in fact as a result of the electronic beam grafting treatment, the cover motif which is "hidden" in the material will gradually reveal itself exclusively through utilization.

Finn represents affection for books, it is a companion that follows the reader in his day-to-day adventure while unveiling itself with time, just like a friend would do.

Monolite

Monolite is a lamp that combines light, sounds, distractions and evocations. It’s an architectonic interactive organ that creates a spatial and emotive elsewhere.

At random times during daytime it reduces ambient light, and an electroluminescent fractal pattern is displayed through the upper cubes' surfaces. Cubes are placed at various depth to decompose the image: to see the pattern there's just one point of view, in front of the lamp. This provides "distraction", breaking the rhythm of time and creating a moment in time and place. The fascination goes on if we decide to get closer to the lamp, we could hear "one minute of somewhere else", ambient recordings of an unknown but real place evocating images, landscapes, voices, feelings.

Thermoplay

Thermoplay is a thermometer specifically designed for children, allowing the user to keep comfortable positions during themperature measure. This thanks to an atoxic syliconic adhesive that sticks to the child's forehead. Since dust could ruin the adhesive, Thermoplay has sort of "petals" made of EVA to protect it while not used.

Anemone

Anemone is a project I made in collaboration with Giovanni Mendini. It's a tablelamp that works both as an interior lamp and as a decorative object. it's main feature it's the unique relationship between the inside and the outside of its structure. Its body is made of sylicone, allowing the user to swithing on or off the lamp by simply reversing it's body as if it was a glove.

Algaster

Algaster is an alga harvesting system, designed for a future agricolture's evolution, less powerful but more intelligent. In fact, algae can be used for energy production because of their high oil content. Furthermore, they provide water cleaning in polluted areas where algae growth may exceed normal conditions (eutrophic waters), generating energy from pollution.
Every machine works individually, communicating between each other like a swarm of insects. Each unit can harvest 100kg of algas every time, storing the load in ten containers placed on the upper side. As the unit ends the available storage, an inflatable structure brings it on the surface.

XBlade

XBlade is a project I've done with Radim Tkadlec. It's a blade specifically designed to increase athlete's results in an olimpic kajak flatwater competition. The main idea behind XBlade is the adjustable joint that keeps the blade facing always the water flow so there's no energy waste. Other innovative features are the ergonomic handles avoiding uncorrect positions and the composite material (a carbonfiber shell filled with poliurethane) less weighting and more resistant.

Annaffiatoio a Luce

Annaffiatoio_a_luce lamp creates an emotional link between energy waste and water consumption. It's an interactive and metaphoric object as you have actually to "pour the light" to turn it on (by using a mercury-free tilt switch).
Environmental awareness drove the whole design process: the chip-on-board led module chosen as light source provides high efficiency and low consumption, and every component can be easily disassembled for higher recyclability (just snap joints, no screws).
