Sketchbook

Some time ago I began a sketchbook in which I wanted to conduct a series of illustrative experiments, both conceptually and materially. It was a really fun experiment to engage on, and I found inspiration from many unexpected avenues. The main focus of the book was derived from ready-made materials and observations around me, and the sketchbook took on a very handmade, sporadic scrapbook type of feel by the time it was completed. It has probably been my most fun and freeing personal project to date. Please enjoy some of the selected spreads. Who knows what the next book will hold!

My Mixed Media

Below is a collection of the better chunk of the work that I produced in Dennis O’Laughlin’s Commercial Art Program in 06 and 07 in Meadville Pa durring my last two years of high school. It was, without a doubt one of the most important experiences of my life thus far, and I owe more than I could ever describe to Dennis for all that he’s done for me. The program is nothing less than one of the best in the country for learning foundational and commercial applications of art and design, and all credit is deserving of Dennis and the dedication he’s made to his helping his students. The Meadville tribune wrote an article about my time there, which I find well written excecpt for the fact that my name is spelled incorrectly over a dozen times.

The Eleflate: Inflatable Plastic Bag Sculpture

Feast your eyes on the Eleflate, a larger than life, but yet lighter than air, full-grown inflatable elephant. First born as a mere plastic bag, this magnificently unique creature was first spotted in New York City on the corner of 5th Ave. and 13th St this past May at the Parsons School of Design. Enjoy the power of plastic!

Gulp: Explore Your Thirst

One of my more in-depth works on identity design, Gulp is an entity centered around it’s internet based search engine. Along with the Gulp search homepage and search results page, I also produced the standard corporate identity of logo, business cards, envelopes and letterheads, along with annual report covers, t-shirts, and brand book. All Type is set in Trade Gothic.

Hot Off the Melody Press

A series of book cover re-designs created by my proposed publishing company, Melody Press. I kept the covers free of imagery to portray a synopsis of each book through the typography of the title. The books used are “The Devil Knows You’re Dead” by Lawrence Block, “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer, and “Nausea” by Jean-Paul Sartre.

Type Specimen Vision Testing

Snellen eye charts, although they are strictly comprised of unique optotypes for determining visual acuity, they do however offer an easily recognizable typographic format in which to play with type. These are three type specimen posters for the TDTF showcasing Helvetica Bold, Adobe Garamond, and Trajan Pro Bold. Although they cannot replace the Snellen eye chart at an optometrist’s office, they would however make a great installation in the home of any witty designer with an extremely long hallway!

New Philippines Currency

Paper currency, regardless of it’s technical beauty, elegant craftsmanship and saturation into everyday life, it is one of the most commonly overlooked aspects of remarkable design… so I chose to redesign some. I decided to go with the Philippine peso, as I will be traveling to Australia and Southeast Asia this winter. I chose to focus primarily on applying governmental requirements, specific imagery, color, and form relative to the Philippines that showcased both internal and external associations with this island nation, and I am more than pleased with the result. I plan to distribute them to locals, possibly as trade if and when I arrive.

Steel City Framing Identity

Steel City Framing, a local framing business snuggled within the metropolis of Pittsburgh Pa, or “The ‘Burgh” asked me to generate an identity package for the new business. These were my initial concepts and ideas and I’m pretty satisfied the results, from logo to letterhead.
