Having worked as an Art Director in design and advertising agencies both in the Chicago and DC areas, in 1996 I became an independent contractor. Since being on my own, I have been providing business-to-business design solutions to a broad spectrum of clients both in the private sectors and the federal government. I take great pride in understanding my clients and their businesses. I feel it is important to first understand “the business” in order to arrive at the best design solutions to meet each of my client’s unique needs.
Over the years I have built lasting relationships with many talented designers, writers, and photographers. Depending upon the size of the project, I pull together the team of talent that will suit a particular project and client the best. If the project is small in nature, I’ll go it alone! Fourteen years ago I teamed with several software developers who’s talents have landed us application development and web application design and development projects from organizations such as VISA, NIH, NASA to name just a few. These software developers understand the internet and internet applications. The internet has very naturally brought our two groups, software development and design, together. Today, one must be expert in both areas to provide comprehensive, well thought-out, and informed solutions.
Though we are a very small company, we have had the good fortune of working with some really wonderful clients. Many of our clients have been with us for years, a few fifteen plus years. We hope this speaks to how seriously we take our client relationships and how hard we work to exceed expectations.
Graphic Design and Marketing
We understand the impact that design has on our everyday lives. Design, when it’s good, inspires us to purchase one product over another, it captures our attention and convinces us to look, read, and take action. But what is good design? What makes design good? The answer might be surprising. Good design not only incorporates the visual, but is also comprised of a good bit of research and discovery. Why you wonder? Well, think about it, how is it possible to even begin designing for and promoting a company about which you know nothing? How can a product be marketed without ever having user experience or without understanding the value of that product to the consumer? Good design and communication with a strong, consistent message provides a sense of trust toward a brand, whether that brand be a product or a company, and this trust translates into long-term customer/client loyalty.
We are experts in the art of design, communication, and yes, research. As a team of seasoned design and communication professionals, we work hard to earn the trust and respect of our clients and always strive to exceed expectations. We realize that each client, each business is very unique and the same design team may not fit the needs of every project. We have a group of freelance designers with whom we have been working for many years, we evaluate each project and assemble the talent that is best suited for that project.
We know that it’s not enough to just say, “I can design a beautiful piece”. A lot of people can create a beautifully designed piece…but if the piece doesn’t get read and doesn’t produce results, then what’s the point? There is a certain way that people naturally read, and it’s pretty much the same across the board whether you live in DC or Dublin. Have you ever picked up a publication only to put it right back down…there are certain things about a page that attracts, and when you look at that page, you just feel good. Without ever reading a word you feel that it’s going to be good reading. What is it, what makes a person want to read? There has to be a balance, a harmony between the pretty and the practical. We have years of experience in designing pages, print and electronic, pages that get read.
We also know that time is in short supply, everyone wishes they had more of it. With such a premium on time, the chance that someone is going to try to sort through a complicated website, brochure, or annual report is slim. So we try to keep things simple and direct. We believe in stating the purpose of the piece up front, at first glance the purpose should be loud and clear, no guess work involved. We keep pages clutter-free, clutter on a page often gives the impression of a difficult read. We create organized pages, if the page is well organized the readers can find what they need quickly and effortlessly.
Look at it this way, the average reader will continue to read as long as the experience is frustration-free and they can quickly access the information they need. The second a reader is asked to ‘work’ for information, you’ve lost them.
We believe very strongly that control should be yours…always yours. Do you really want your message open to interpretation? It is, unless you take control of how your message is read and understood. We are very conscience of exactly how your information is presented. We use graphics, photos, headlines, subheads, call-outs, and yes white space, lots of it if we can, to guide the audience, to give them direction. We tell them where to begin, how to work their way around the materials, and where to end. Never leave it to the reader to try to find their own way or you run the risk of important information being overlooked, and when information is overlooked, then your message may very well be compromised.
It’s true that there are those people who will never read everything. Rather, they skip around “scan” the pages until they happen upon an area that attracts and seems interesting. It is also true that the elements on a page that attract one’s attention while scanning are photos, captions, headlines, and call-out copy and if a reader focuses on nothing more than these few elements, they should have a pretty good idea of what your message is. The page should be strategically designed in such a fashion that your reader’s eye is lead to theses areas that tell your story even if they never read the full copy.
We specialize in creating materials that are clear, concise, and always get your message across. We build loyalty.
In addition to designing a piece, our clients often ask us to help them in the groundwork decisions that are made before a project actually gets underway. We are happy to give advice with reference to the kinds of pieces that should be produced for a particular need, how these pieces should work, to whom they should be marketed and the best content and visual organization for the piece. We have experienced technical writers, copywriters, and copy editors with whom we work, who can not only receive content written by the client, offering guidance in the logic and organization of the copy when necessary, but can also provide help in putting the client’s copy into “one voice”. We are also fully capable of researching and writing content, whatever the client’s preference may be. We have a vast library of our own stock photography and we work with many talented photographers and have experience researching and finding photography within the many stock houses.
We believe in communication, and are very good communicators. We are never hard to get a hold of and always return calls quickly…really. We also provide each of our clients with 24 hour Internet access through our dedicated connection to World Wide Web and File Transfer Protocol (FTP) servers. This service allows our clients to either upload or download files pertaining to their project, allowing them to view their project during the development cycle. Because of the nature of some of the work we do we are very sensitive to security and provide a volume for each one of our clients on our servers with encrypted logon names and passwords providing them with a safe and secure work environment. “Renan has been a key contributor to the highly successful and internationally recognized publications produced by the National Technology Transfer Center – Washington Operations (NTTC-WO). We have had a highly productive working relationship with Renan beginning with the opening of our Alexandria, VA office in 1993. Since that time, Renan has provided design and graphics products for a wide range of publications for NTTC-WO clients including the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and Missile Defense Agency and its predecessor, Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. As a result of Renan’s contributions, publications for NTTC-WOs clients have won wide-ranging awards and accolades, including, most recently, the Award of Excellence in the International Competition by The Society for Technical Communications. The productive teaming of Renan and NTTC-WO is one of which we are extremely proud, and one which we intend to continue as we meet our publication and graphic design obligations to our clients.“

“When I was assistant secretary for technology policy at the U.S. Department of Commerce, we relied heavily on Renan Kiper to produce our most important government reports; those congressionally-mandated and even one under the seal of the White House. Our goal was to present material in such a way as to entice readership, not to simply fulfill a mandate and have the report live on a shelf without being read. While Renan was sensitive to our budget constraints and deadlines, she was still able to help us produce an artistic, creative, quality report that was of good value for the taxpayer and satisfied our Congressional audience as well. Renan is thoroughly professional and is a joy to work with. I recommend her without reservation.”

Renan Kiper produced two high-quality publications describing research programs sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Renan provided end-to-end design and managed the printing and production process. Both publications were superb; they received rave reviews from the client and everyone else who saw them. It’s no exaggeration to say that they set a new standard for the design quality of NSF publications. In addition to her creativity and professional skills, Renan is extremely easy and fun to work with. She listens and communicates well and is very flexible and collaborative in her approach to a project. I would recommend her to anyone.

“Renan puts into pictures the stories we put into words. And she does it with great skill and integrity. Renan is an exceptional player on our team and has been part of it for nearly 20 years. Whether it is a brochure, a CD, or an 90-page coffee table piece, Renan helps us convey complex information in an easy-to-read way. The technology (and technical) information we present to our readership through the written word requires her to understand the key points being made as well as to know how best to convey those points visually. Renan offers both, and that (to me) is a rare talent. The bottom line: Renan’s work qualitatively enhances our ability to convey technical information that readers can understand. Here’s what one International STC judge said of a recent publication of ours “The highly engaging design draws the audience in and keeps them interested throughout the publication. ”The layout and design are wonderfully appealing, very approachable, and very consistent with effective use of page real estate.” Another STC judge commented: “This is a beautiful publication! The design and layout are stunning, the integration extremely well done, and the writing is clear and informative, and allows readers to move along at a nice pace!”
Renan is an exceptionally talented graphic arts designer, who grasps complex topics and turns them into visually-supported stories that are easy to read and to understand. She is an asset to our outreach team, and an awesome choice for any visual product we undertake.”
