In today’s society we share a common culture and resources that impact our daily lives as humans. As these resources become volatile and sparse, new social issues arise, and we must make choices with the future in mind. Many “thought leaders” and companies are working to improve this future with solutions that make an impact on how we will live, work, and play.These companies use their brand to communicate their messages in a clean and concise way. This is why Riverbed is important. As Riverbed’s namesake indicates, we are the foundation between two sides of the river of communication. On one side of the river is a company looking to promote its ideas and services. On the other side of the river is an audience looking for a solution. Riverbed sees design as a critical element in redefining how we use and view our resources. Everything that humans have created had to be designed at one point in its lifecycle. Whether it is a building, object, brand or communication it starts with defining what is the purpose for creating it. What is it supposed to do, how long will it last, what happens to it after it is used, what is the cost, what resources will it use and who is it intended for. These are the parameters that define a project and its design. Riverbed takes these parameters one step farther and views them through a sustainability lens.

# Can it be lighter and smaller to minimize waste?
# Can it use less materials, be re-useable or multi-functional?
# Can you use recycled, reclaimed materials and renewable resources to make it?
# Can you avoid toxic materials?
# Is it sourced from local, socially and environmentally responsible companies?
# Are the materials third party certified?
# Can it be made to last beyond its lifecycle or serve another use?
# How can it be distributed using less energy and materials?

These are design problems that weigh the economic, environmental, and social impact versus the communication needs that meet the end goal for the project. What do you hope to accomplish with the project and what are the externalities resulting from it? We look for areas where we can improve and maximize the cost of communications in a sustainable way by minimizing the impact and creating less waste. Riverbed has created a report card to account for the variables considered in a sustainable graphic design project. We believe that every project we work on can be improved through this process and lead to a successful end result. This is a collaborative effort with our clients.
