Pedro Mendes is a Portuguese architect with 23 years of professional experience. At the beginning of his career, between 1991 and 1995, worked in the office of the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, where he had the opportunity to meet, develop and coordinate a vast and broad variety of projects such as the development of public and prived buildings and urban public spaces..
Since 1997 he settled his own office (Pedro Mendes Arquitectos, Lda) where the projects undertaken comprehend and include urban requalification, refurbishment and preservation of the heritage, development of housing typologies such as single houses, condos and office buildings, manufacturing typologies, public equipments such as school, cultural, and community buildings in the cities of Lisbon, Oporto, Sintra, Alcanena, Almada, Matosinhos, Estoril, etc.
Pedro Mendes headed the teams for the general architecture and urban design project, coordinating the relationships with the commissioner of the works, the government and municipal licensing entities in the areas of safety, heritage and environment, as well as the special projects teams (security, foundations and structures, electrical, electromechanical and communication installations, AVAC, water supply and drainage, thermal and acoustic sustainability) and outside layouts and landscaping. Pedro Mendes also headed construction assistance in collaboration with the representatives of those commissioning the work, with the construction companies and with the planners for the engineering work, the outer fittings and the landscaping.
Over the last fourteen years he developed an academic career in parallel with his professional activity. Pedro Mendes has, along with his students, developed a research that combines his professional experience with the project design discipline. The research focus on the regeneration and sustainability of different territories and the connections with buildings (public equipments, housing, refurbishment and preservation of the heritage) and urban public spaces. Pedro Mendes has a PhD in architecture UL - Lisboa (2012) and is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Architecture and Urbanism at ISCTE-IUL in Lisbon and teaches disciplines of Project Design VII and VIII (Integrated master in Architecture).
