As a graphic designer turned photographer, Michelle Holder has been taking photos for four years. For this Washington D.C. native, photography began as a hobby. Eventually, it grew into an ongoing enlightening experience where she learned various ways of storytelling and communication through a single image.
Much like in her paintings, drawings and even within some of her graphic design work, her photography often contains dynamic composition that provokes thought and emotion from the viewer. Having a well-rounded background within the fine arts (particularly painting and drawing), and design, has contributed to her unique shooting style (such as strong color palette, strong composition and direct underlining messages for the viewer).
As a Bachelors of Art graduate of the Corcoran College of Art + Design, Michelle Holder has not only entered the world with a new wealth of knowledge but also with a notion of the environment in which she lives is at her disposal in unraveling simple discoveries in the world. She views Washington D.C. or any location she finds herself in as a new world of continuous uncharted territory—she is never afraid to go out, explore and practice perfecting her craft.
Aside from finding people, places, and things to photograph on her own, she volunteers as a photographer for her local church, Greater Mount Calvary Holy Church in Washington D.C. where Arch-Bishop Alfred A. Owens, Evangelist Susie C. Owens, and Associate Pastor, Bishop T. Cedric Brown preside. There, she has gained experience capturing photos of various well known preachers, public figures, singers, church events/services, but most importantly—priceless moments of people part-taking in the worship experience.
Since the age of 16, her work has been exhibited in various local and national contests and exhibitions such as The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, The Maryland State Treasury Department of Annapolis Maryland for the Visual Arts Exhibition, and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Talent Hunt just to name a few. Her work was also exhibited with 13 digital media designers whose thesis was featured in the annual senior thesis exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 2006. As she continues to work, grow, and develop as a photographer, she plans to gain exposure through book publishing and featuring her work in exhibitions.
The world is her canvas when photographing anything. However, nature has been the focus of a new photography series she is producing. Her current work focuses on roses in particular—what once was an admiration of them, grew into a pursuit to capture striking imagery of this exquisite flower. Beauty Fades Not is the first photography series she has published as a photographer. It features various colorful fading roses presented in such vivid detail to bring the viewer’s attention to the beauty aspect in their diminishing state.
Currently she resides and works in Upper Marlboro, Maryland (USA), where she enjoys other interests and activities such as; writing, reading, painting, drawing, cinema and enjoying the company of family and friends. Read Less
