Bio/Resume
Sergey Gribov a.k.a. photopusher.
Born in Ukraine, came to United States in 1989 with background in graphic art and
illustration. I learned photography from my father, an extremely gifted amateur
photographer. Started my career as professional photographer in state of Rhode
Island by working for small studio as a school photographer, traveling all over R.I.
south eastern MA and parts of CT, doing portraits thousands of children from pre-K
to high school and documenting activities from sporting events to proms and
graduations, which allowed me to get to know a human aspect of this seemingly
technical profession.
Mean while i was building my own business doing commercial photography for
companies like Tahoe Jewelry and Swarovski. Soon Greater Providence
Chamber Of Commerce, Brown University and Bryant University were added to
the list of my accounts and I started to work for myself exclusively.
In spring of 2001 I moved to New York, relocation was by personal reasons rather
then professionally motivated, but gave me an opportunity to reflect professionally
and put my experience in the new perspective. After enjoying relatively slow and
quiet life back in New England, I joined the army of hungry and ambitious New
York freelance artists, and faced a question: what type of photography I would
like to pursue.
Major distinctive quality of this vibrant city is it's people, and I had an opportunity
to interact and communicate with them on daily basis and was fascinated by it's
diversity of demographics and characters. I have never seen so many talented
people living in one city. This how I found my subject of interest: People.
Since I moved to New York I've done family and children portraits, head shots
and portfolios for number of private clients as well as special events from fashion
and art shows to weddings, done still photography for TV commercials and sitcom
pilot, interior architecture for designer Diane Boyer - ASID and "Hunterdon Life"
publication, covered "eats & drinks" section for New York Press.
I have learned to read people and their behavior, and often take short series
of shots to tell a story or convey the mood of a given moment, but reluctant to use
continuous shooting, I study and observe subject to reveal it's character, than
anticipate and shoot, I can miss, but I always know what I am aiming for.
My portrait sessions take place in person own environment, and often require
some time to make subject feel comfortable with me and camera, I approach
people with great respect, and use my people skills to connect with character
of my subject, my images are live and dynamic, my photography is unique and
very personal.
Started to use digital camera in 2003, still have my 35 mm, medium and large
format film equipment, but rarely use it, (only by clients special request)
consider the cost of film and processing.
Documentary and photojournalism appeal to me the most and I would love to
dedicate more time and effort to learn it to succeed.
