Paulo Gaspar Ferreira was born in Oporto in 1964.
He graduated in “Visual Arts” in the “School of Decorative Arts Soares dos Reis” (Escola de Artes Decorativas Soares dos Reis). He also concluded the Course in “Studio Photography” in the “Technical School of Photography of Oporto” (Escola Técnica de Fotografia do Porto) run by José Manuel Queirós de Faria.

Participated in several collective exhibitions, namely:
• 1981- Salão de Fotografia O Comboio (“Photography SalonThe Train”) ,
Vila Real.

• 1983- Particip’arte. Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto.

• 1984 - Exposição Nacional do Pequeno Formato (“National Exhibition of Small Format”). Cooperativa Árvore.

- IV Bienal Internacional de Arte. (“4th International Biennial of Art”) Vila Nova de Cerveira.

-V Exposição Colectiva (“5th Collective Exhibition”). Cooperativa Árvore.

In the same year founded the group Espaço Linear (“Linear Space”) and organized an exhibition in the Gallery Barca d’Artes, in the Cultural Center of Alto Minho in Viana do Castelo.
He also enrolled on a workshop organized by the “Superior School of Fine Arts of Oporto” (Escola Superior de Bellas Artes do Porto) under the supervision of the photographer André Gelpke.

In the early 90s Paulo Ferreira began developing some other major projects/exhibitions, either individually or in close collaboration with other world known individuals:

• 1990 - Galeria da Praça . Porto. 
Exhibition presented by the art critic Prof. Joaquim Matos Chaves.
- Galeria Finalmente . Guimarães.

• 1991- Instituto de Clínica Geral da  Zona  Norte.
[This display occurred at the time of the conference entitled A Angústia  Écológica (“The Ecological Anguish”) presented by Professor Eurico de Figueiredo in the 2º Encontro de Ciências Humanas - O Reviver da Ilha de Cós (“2nd Human Science Meeting – The Revival of Kos Island”)].

• 1993- Collaboration with the Spanish Magazine “Numquam Tacebo”
published in Barcelona.

• 2001- Collaboration with Maria João Pires on the conception of the Graphic Design and Photography of the CD “Moonlight”, Beethoven, Sonatas “Quasi Una Fantasia” for the Deutsch Grammophon / Universal Music.

-Exhibition of the project developed in collaboration with António Ramos Rosa in Brazil (Bahia e Recife): Cada Árvore é um Ser para Ser em Nós (“Each Tree is a Being to Be in Us”).

-Production of the Graphic Design and Photography for the vinyl Espiral (“Spiral”) by Miguel Carvalhinho for the Publisher Emarcy / Universal Music.

• 2002- Publication of the book Cada Árvore é um Ser para Ser em Nós
(“Each Tree is a Being to Be in Us”) in the In-Libris – Culture and Book Promotion Company; a Co-production with the poet António Ramos Rosa, being Paulo Ferreira the author of its photography and design conception.

• 2003- Publication of the book Penso Sujo in the In-Libris
– Culture and Book Promotion Company; a co-production with Carlos Tê inspired by the resultant black tide of the crude spillage, at the time of the sinking of the tanker “Prestige”, on the Coast of Galicia.

• 2004- Publication of the book Nenhuma Flor, Oito Imagens e o Dizer dos
Lábios (“No Flowers, Eight Images and the Saying of the Lips”) in the In-Libris – Culture and Book Promotion Company; a co-production with Sandra Costa of photos and poems, “emerging” from the resultant ashes of the fire which occurred in Granja de Belgais, the ancient farmhouse where Maria João Pires had once founded her Center for the Study of Arts.

- Exhibition in Galiza / Spain of photos integrating the book Penso Sujo (“Dirty Plaster”).

- Display in FIL (“International Fair of Lisbon”) at the invitation of the Instituto De Emprego e Formação Profissional (“Institute of Employment and Professional Development) at the time of the delivery of the Prémio de Mérito — Mostra de Excelência e Iniciativa (a Merit Award in recognition of the Demonstration of Excellency and Initiative).

• 2005 - Coordination of the graphic edition of the Sopro Collection at the Invitation of Roma Editora; it includes the publication of titles like Génese (“Genesis”) by António Ramos Rosa; O Livro das Quedas (“The Book of Fall”) by Casimiro de Brito; Na Voz de Um Nome (“In the Voice of a Name”) by Fernando Guimarães and Fragmentos São Sementes (“Fragments are Seeds”) by Novalis.

- Exhibition Espíritos Elementares. Onze Simulacros (“Elementary Spirits. Eleven Simulacra”) Hospital Geral de Stº. António. Porto.

- Exhibition Espíritos Elementares. Seis Simulacros (“Elementary Spirits. Six Simulacra”) Instituto Camões. Lisboa.

• Development of the project O Melhor do Mundo (“The Best of the Word”) – Photography of Expressive Infant Portrait; a partnership work with several Primary Schools.

• Conception and Organization of a series of Speeches by invitation of the Instituto Português de Fotografia (“Portuguese Institute of Photography”) generically entitled as Encontros do Olhar (“Eye Meetings”).

Since 1986 Paulo Ferreira has been simultaneously developing several projects of graphic and editorial coordination together with his activity as a photographer.
His work is represented in several private and institutional collections in Portugal, Spain, France, Brazil and The United States of America. Read Less
