'Creativity is a form of intelligence - I have always believed this. Maybe I am just making excuses for my lesser maths and science skills, but creativity isn’t something that can be learnt. Either you are creative or you are not.

I have always been fascinated in films. Movies and television helped craft my childhood, as education and as entertainment, and continue to do so today; they are a significant aspect of my life.

I was introduced to film making when I participated in a workshop, which involved writing, directing, filming, and editing my own film over two days. It was this experience that inspired me to follow up film production. I loved the idea of capturing my vision of how a story should be perceived and making it my own. I came to appreciate films far more than I had previously and realised how important their place was within the creative arts; for me it filled a gap that could not be achieved through live theatre – a play must have actors to tell a story. I don’t believe that this is a necessity for a film as the camera itself can be used as a creative tool.

After I joined a small film making company, ‘Image Productions’, I soon began working on some projects; as I worked up to the position of cinematographer, which I found particularly interesting, I learnt an appreciation for all the aspects on a film set. I use the experience I gained over 4 years working for them to produce my own films. I always try to make sure they look as professional as possible, especially with the way the camera is used to tell the story. I followed up my interest in cinematography with my A levels by doing Photography as part of Art. When I saw the critically acclaimed ‘The Kings Speech’, I loved the way that the whole film was shot. From the cinematography point of view, It was very different from any other film I had seen.

Drama has also been a passion of mine from a very young age; having the freedom to perform world class pieces of theatre, study famous practitioners and apply their theory and methods to devised pieces of drama is a great opportunity. I am particularly fond of the work of Bertolt Brecht. I try to apply his methods to my own work, as I am inspired by his ideals in theatre.

Films feed my urge to tell a story in my own unique way, and then place it on YouTube for all to see. For me it is a great social activity as well as being a creative output. Recently I produced an introduction video based around the Countdown theme song for a House Music event at my school. Shown in front of over 1000 people it was highly commended. As my experience and knowledge of film has grown, I believe I can better determine what makes a good film, and what does not.

I am also very passionate about music; I play jazz or blues style piano and have been doing so since the age of 6. I believe that music plays an integral part in a film. Music can totally turn a scene on its head, changing the mood and atmosphere to give the opposite effect from what was originally intended.
The arts in general play an important part in my life, they always have done. At the age of 15 I managed to achieve my bronze Arts award, in which I mainly focused on film making. At the other end of the scale I enjoy sailing and managed to achieve my first two sailing qualifications within a month'

As well as film making, there are other interests that fill my life. I am a keen photographer. I have only had the chance to study photography from 2011 as the new Art course i was attending offered Photography as part of the sylabus. Since then i have attained a high level of achievement through my photograpy and have explored many different aspects and techniques to try and find my forte. Read Less
