My paintings and prints are generated from an intuitive visual exploration of color, shape and form, and playful experimentation with chance outcomes. Similar to the concept of a collage, both literally and metaphorically —using existing imagery, cutting it up, and assembling the pieces to create something new —compositions develop organically, without a fixed plan. Instead of thinking of my work in the usual terms of imagination, invention, and inspiration, I aim to take a more pragmatic approach that allows my hand freer rein over the creative process. Each painting progresses as a sequence of hundreds of smaller decisions or “accidents” that are permitted–or not–to enter the final work, each step towards completion is an opportunity to continue making decisions about what works or not and what’s next. I often work serially across multiple versions of a similar motif, and by constant reworking, willful mishaps, artificially imposed limitations, transparencies, layering, and sanding. Combined, these techniques give me a detached eye and allow the work to proceed in a way that sidesteps expectations. Compositions seem to develop according to their own logic, with little useful distinction between what I intended and what happened. The final image is about the metamorphosis and aesthetic appreciation of the source material rendered into new interactions between color, shape, and form. Read Less
