designing BIG BANG albums for Japanese debut

if you reside in or spend time on the continent of Asia [or read Perez on the daily], you may be familiar with a chart-busting group named Big Bang. they’ve recently made their way into Japan, signing with Universal and debuting #3 on the charts this past June with their first single “MY HEAVEN”.

i’ve been working closely with YG Entertainment Japan and Universal Japan on developing the design assets and album covers for their Japanese releases.

to be honest, although i didn’t listen to much of their genre, i’m impressed with these kids and their music; they work real hard to get where they are and they deserve all their success. in this self-titled album, they sing and rap in English, Korean, AND Japanese, not to mention all the vibrato that they bring to their dancing and music vid performances. hopefully i can catch them in October when they go on their Japan tour.

Big Bang is categorized as a hip pop band, but i was trying to stray away from making album covers that traditionalized the group with slick full-bodied photographic representations. with the LP covers, we wanted to give the die-hard fans a little more of the boys [with substantial booklet inserts], and with the standard CD releases, the faces are relatively shrouded.

below are a range of covers, supplementals, posters and ads.

SKULLMATES: a work in progress

Skullmates are a species of charming parasites that burrow themselves into skulls [dead / alive, fictional / non-fictional] and make them their new homes. In that respect, Skullmates are the new hermit crab. i’m not really gearing them towards any specific demographic - i am just into them.

Skullmates have cute faces with giddy expressions. the goal here is simple - if you stare at them long enough, they should make you happy too [granted though, that’s just based on my own personal experience… i do a lot of staring].

ROYAL ELASTICS motion piece, KNIGHT

alas! we've completed our :30 animated spot for Royal Elastic's newest seasonal campaign, FRESHTECH. the shoe featured here is the Knight, as they've got the whole middle age theme on the shoe names going on.

FRESHTECH is the New Bermuda Triangle Vortex. And NATURE and TECHNOLOGY are its missing travelers. It's shrouded in mystery, and one rarely knows what's going on. In those instances that you do, we give u a glimpse of the sexual [yes, it's somewhat sexual but sfw] synergy that happens within.

Sean Starkweather contributed to a portion of design and practically animated the entire thing on his own. check his site.

and we popped Nosaj Thing's sound design cherry. sounds sick. nosajthing.com

ROYAL ELASTICS toy + shoe collaboration: HOMOGENY

HOMOGENY is collaboration between Nanospore and Royal Elastics - set for a Fall '08 release. it features our little nameless friend, which serves as a symbol of the similarity in structure between organs or parts, possibly of dissimilar function, that are related by common descent. Light and dark. Color and monochrome. Land and sea. Love and hatred. Joy and pain.

Fuse Ident, MUSIC IS A TIME MACHINE

hi all, we just press released our Fuse TV's idents, which got featured on Motionagrapher, Top Spot feature on Boards and a feature on Stash's Feed as well. and, although the original music track we intended to use was Kanye's Classic, featuring Rakim, Nas and KRS-One [there was a slew of licensing issues that prevented it], he still managed to blog about it last month - Kanye's Blog.

we were fine with all that though, when Rahzel jumped on board to make the current beatboxed track from scratch. you'll notice the bpm's to Classic and our "Back in the Day" track are identical. btw, Rahzel doesn't talk like a walking vocoder on conference calls. what a disappointment.

ROYAL ELASTICS print campaign

so we got the OK to PR these print ads we did for Royal's next ad campaign, featuring many of the shoes for this year's new releases. we are talking about first and third quarter releases so don't get too excited - some of these styles and colourways may not drop for a good few months.
