Mehmet S. Akten is an artist, musician and interaction designer seeking to create emotional, interactive audio-visual experiences. With programming as his primary artist’s tool; he develops and explores invisible digital technologies for the use of creating new instruments for artistic expression. Fields of special interest are generative algorithms, computer vision, ambient intelligence combined with traditional music and visual design methodologies and narrative.
He is currently running the London based studio MSA Visuals Ltd - The Mega Super Awesome Visuals Company - and has worked with international brands such as Adidas, Apple, Arnold, Citizens Bank, Honda, Moving Brands, Rolls-Royce, Texas Instruments, Toyota as well as arts & music organizations such as Aldeburgh Music, Ars Electronica, BBC Philharmonic, Glastonbury Festival, Minitek music and innovation festival, The Rambert Dance Company, Tyneside Cinema, Warp Records.
His latest project was a commission by Streetwise Opera to create interactive generative visuals for an opera composed by Mira Calix of Warp Records and performed by the Streewise Opera performers. ‘My Secret Heart’ recently premiered at the Royal Festival Hall and is currently on tour around the world as a performance and stand alone installation.
Mehmet was born and grew up in Istanbul, Turkey in 1975. His interest in art & technology started at an early age. Fascinated by the hacker demo-scene of the 80s, he started programming music & graphics demos on the 8-bit computers of the era. Also learning piano and guitar from an early age, and with influences ranging from classical to jazz, ambient to industrial, he has performed in various bands and with various styles in many cites across the UK, France, Italy and Turkey.
In 1997, after completing a BSc in Engineering he moved to London, UK. It was during this degree that he secured a firm foundation in physics and maths, as well as an analytical approach to problem solving - which would be crucial to his later work. After graduating, he started working in the video games industry. During these five years he focused on designing and programming visual effects, physics and playability; for platforms such as PC, PS2, XBox, GameCube, DreamCast; and acquired invaluable experience with realtime graphics and user interaction. Leaving the video games industry in 2003 to pursue more immersive interactive experiences, Mehmet has since been running MSA Visuals Ltd.
