I currently work as art director for a Japanese chocolatier. I have designed the brand, packaging, website and other marketing materials. I have also developed techniques for producing food-safe chocolate moulds to allow the design theme to be extended to the shapes of the chocolates themselves.
A combination of strong analytical skills and conservative careers guidance led me to study Mathematics at university, even though my passion was for the creative arts. My fascination with abstract concepts, however, refused to go away, and I ended up specialising in Pure Mathematics. I graduated with the degree of Master in Science with Honours Class 1.
I continued to maintain a strong interest in the creative arts, through music, drawing and a deep fascination with traditional Japanese arts and crafts.
This fascination led me to spend 7 years living and working in Japan. Whilst there I was introduced to oriental calligraphy. In my humble opinion, this is one of the pinnacles of human artistic achievement: the fusion of fine art, design and literature rendered with the simplest of media.
I was taken under the wing of Ikeda Keisen-sensei and joined the Japan Kyūryū Calligraphy Association. I have continued my studies to a level where I am now qualified to teach oriental calligraphy. In 2006, my work was selected for the Mainichi National Calligraphy Exhibition and displayed at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art. Read Less
