De Saisset Museum

Docent

I worked for the De Saisset Museum on campus at Santa Clara University for three months. It was an unpaid internship where I researched the exhibitions that were on display in the museum's galleries as well as the artist's backgrounds. Then, once I had done adequate research I was prepared to give groups a tour of the exhibitions and answer any questions the group may have. I gave tours to families, college level classes, and elementary level classes. It was really enjoyable to be able to work with such diverse age groups in the realm of public speaking.

Education

Fordham University

Fordham University offers an amazing summer study abroad program in art history that looks at the ancient art and architecture of Rome. Our class spent three hours each day examining a different sculptures, paintings, and buildings that construct the ancient history of Rome to the time of the Renaissance. We were required to keep a daily journal and present a thesis to the class at a specific historical site. For example, I was more interested in the Renaissance time period and presented a thesis on Michelangelo de Merisi Caravaggio and the artist's work. I gave my presentation to the class at the Galleria Borghese which houses three of his paintings, including one of Caravaggio's most famous pieces, "David with the Head of Goliath."

Santa Clara University

One of the incredible opportunities that Santa Clara has offered is a semester long study abroad program in Burkina Faso of West Africa. The SCU abroad program is called "Reading West Africa." The founders of the program are Michael Kevane, Leslie Gray, and the support of David Pace. The root of their work and this program stem from their connection with an NGO called, "Friends of African Village Libraries (FAVL)." FAVL's goal is to promote literacy rates throughout the less fortunate communities of Africa. Currently, FAVL manages fifteen libraries spread throughout Burkina Faso, Uganda, Ghana, and Tanzania. FAVL works closely with the communities in transforming buildings, donated by the community, into libraries so that everyone in the community can have free access to books. Furthermore, they provide librarian training as well as paid salaries to librarians. A vital part of a thriving community is the value of a quality education. FAVL has made it their mission to be an integral part of providing the tools necessary to those less fortunate in hopes of building a path towards a stronger education. We as students played in a role in that by compiling images in our digital photography class with David Pace and creating children's books out of them. The books were published in the USA and were then shipped back to Burkina Faso to be distributed throughout their sponsored libraries. At the same time we were studying Burkina Faso and other third world countries to gain a sense of what it is really like for a poor country to develop economically. I learned so much from my experiences there and the people themselves taught me alot. I am truly grateful for being able to take part in such an amazing experience.

Santa Clara University

I studied abroad for the third time in the South of France through an IES Abroad program that was sponsored by Santa Clara University. I took an Art History course on the History of Photography as well as a course in intermediate French. One of my favorite languages is French and I love the French culture. It was a difficult study abroad because despite my love for the language my brain still battles with articulating and comprehending the French language. I gained a whole new perspective from living in the small city of Arles, France. I felt like I had become a part of the culture. There was a huge international Photo Exhibition that was comprised of multiple photographers' bodies of work that ran for a whole month while I was there. The city was alive with so many different types of people and so many photographers offering their own artistic perspectives to the world. Our big project for the History of Photography course was to present one of the photographer's exhibitions to the class and explain their work to the class in French. I learned alot from the courses but I think I learned more just from walking around the city and talking to locals.

Santa Clara University

Santa Clara University offers so many opportunities for students to really find what they are interested in and looking for in a higher education that allows students to push themselves to their full potential. I started out as a political science major thinking I wanted to become a lawyer. I took one basic drawing course as a requirement for my general degree and I found that I was putting more work into drawing then I was in any of my other classes. I had teachers pushing me to become an art major but I had never even thought about actually pursuing a career in art before coming to Santa Clara University. This university has helped me look to the future and pushed me to go after the things I really want and how those things can make a difference in the world.
