A cartoonist, Javier Mariscal gained notoriety around 1970 for his comic strip “Señor Caballito” and, subsequently, “Los Garriris” which have been a mainstay for him ever since then. During the 1980s, he received attention for his industrial design activity, one of his most well-regarded pieces was the stool “Duplex”, created along with his interior design for a bar in Valencia, Spain of the same name. These works would lead him to work with the group Memphis.
In 1979, he created one of his most iconic pieces, the image BAR CEL ONA, making it one of the city’s major symbols.
In the 1990s, he was elected to design the official mascot of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Cobi, the mascot would become the most profitable one ever in the history of the Olympic Games.
Together with his team at the Mariscal Studio, founded in 1989, he has designed a multitude of works: designing furniture for Moroso, numerous magazine covers for New Yorker magazine, interior design for the Hotel Dómine in Bilbao, graphics for the HM clothing shop, the 11th floor of the Hotel Puerta America in Madrid, the logo for the Onda Cero radio network, and the image and communication for Camper for Kids, among others.
In 2000, it is necessary to highlight his animation series “Twipsy” based on the mascot created for Hanover’s Universal Expo. Mariscal’s work in animation has been present throughout his career, crossing over into other frontiers such as the “Colors” conference, which was later adapted for the theater.
Having close ties to music, he has also designed countless record jackets besides creating the global image for the record label Jazz Latino Calle 54.
In 2009, he realized an exposition of his work for the London Design Museum, in addition to two monographic publications: Mariscal Drawing Life and Sketches. In 2010, Barcelona exhibited his retrospective exhibition at La Pedrera. That same year, he premiered the animation feature, “Chico & Rita”, directed by Fernando Trueba.
His recent projects include a retrospective exhibition in Seul, the graphic image of the local feasts of La Mercé in Barcelona and the graphics, interior design and sculptures for the shopping center Les Glories.
