Luke Daniel is a photographer, born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. Always being a visually orientated individual, constantly identifying unique forms of beauty within this fascinating world around us, he consciously embarked on his photographic path in 2008. Starting his formal photographic training in early 2009, at City Varsity –he began to explore various photographic genres, moulding a distinguishable style and furthermore being drawn towards Documentary Photography and Photojournalism.
With a supreme passion for photography and a relentless commitment to excellence and perfection, he embarked on many personal Documentary orientated projects. Coupling his intense love for music, with his devotion to photography – he spent long hours at music venues all across Cape Town, documenting the Town’s music scene, with focus on the mostly struggling musicians. It is a project which is constantly ongoing, as his adoration for music and photography as art forms, constantly provide him with incredible and priceless inspiration.
Further inspiration comes from literature, film and the photographic works of early Documentary Photographer’s who worked mainly with musicians, including Elliot Landy, Annie Leibovitz, and John ‘Hoppy’ Hopkins.
It’s this love for the classics, that influence Luke Daniel’s approach to photography and photographic style, which includes his love and extensive use of Black and White photography.
Assisting various commercial photographers and cinematographers, the idea that ‘knowledge is power’ is something which is strongly believed in, in the never-ending hunt for information and experience. In saying that, putting that information into practical use is where the importance really lies. To shoot, and never stop shooting was a lesson Luke learnt very early on, in his photographic career. That commitment along with paying close attention to detail, shape his images and ideas.
His work has is regularly featured on Mahala, (www.mahala.co.za) and has been featured on Vice. In addition to this, his photographs have been published in various magazines and books, too. Photographing music festivals for various publications and occasionally festival organisers, alike – long hours under stressful conditions and tight deadlines are circumstances Luke has become accustomed with.
Receiving his diploma in Professional Photography, from City Varsity, in 2010, the future looks bright.
“I know that this (photography) is my purpose – my motivation, my reason. Photography is on my mind and heart, all day, every day - I want to be doing this, until the day I die.”
