Kieran McMillan

Head of Product Design, Platform

Berlin, Germany
I've been conceiving, designing and delivering digital products and services since the late 90s. I use Lean UX and user centered design processes to get to to the heart of what customers and users need.

Between 2002 - 2010 I was founder of a design agency in London which I directed for 8 years. During this time I learned what it takes to build a business from scratch. I cultivated a culture of collaboration, and dedicated time and resources into developing internal research and development projects in order to drive innovation.

Between 2010 - 2014 I consulted with a number of startups in London, Paris and San Francisco.

Brands I have worked with include Apple, Nokia, Virgin, UNESCO, Quebec Government, Sony BMG & Visa and my portfolio includes solutions for industries including travel, entertainment, talent management, education, television, NGOs and startups.

DNA Of Design

Founder

In 2010 I co-founded the digital consultancy DNA of Design, which helps brands and organisations nurture niche online communities around a cause or theme. The consultancy provides digital media design, strategy, communication and production services for clients such as London Design Festival, University of the Arts London and University of Greenwich and specialist luxury travel startup Lawrence of Morocco. We regularly provide white-label consultancy and interactive services for other agencies with clients such as Visa.

Raw Nerve

Founder

In 2002, I co-founded Raw Nerve, a London based design consultancy that helped brands and organisations build, nurture and engage with communities. Within eight years we became a leading consultancy with an international reputation. Our projects were referenced in the Mayor of Londonʼs cultural strategy, featured in NY Times and Italian Vogue and shared by bloggers around the globe. We invited key specialists with a diverse skill- set to collaborate under the Raw Nerve umbrella. I led a number of small internationally based teams to prototype and develop new online publishing products which focussed on niche services such as local, regional and international creative showcasing. I
also produced interactive experiences and motion graphics for web and broadcast. Clients included London Design Festival, University of the Arts London, Groundwork, Channel 4, Film Flex, ITV, Sony BMG, NHS, Sorrell Foundation, Tent London and The Princes Trust. We also provided white-label design services for other agencies with clients including Apple, VISA Siemens & Quintessentially.

Digital Arts

Digital Designer

Digital Arts was one of London’s leading digital design agencies, which offered innovative interactive media solutions for fashion, lifestyle and entertainment industries. My position involved design of brand identity, interactive, print marketing, user experience, and motion graphics for clients including Virgin, Sega and Jade Jagger. During my second year I became the design and technical lead on an internal project called Ammo City, an online lifestyle and radio magazine at the forefront of contemporary culture. The concept was highly acclaimed in the media, and attracted over 120,000 members within a few months. As a team, we devised long-term strategies for viral marketing and offline events.

HERE Technologies

Senior UX Designer

I'm a user experience designer working with the Product Innovation team in the IoT Business Group at HERE, the leading location cloud platform.

In my day-to-day, I work closely with user researchers to apply Design Thinking processes that help multi-disciplinary teams including; product, architecture, data science, and engineering to solve innovation challenges. We achieve this by researching user contexts, needs and goals to create a holistic view of the problem space. Then we iterate potential ideas through workshops and evaluate solutions with prototypes and user testing. Finally, we work with other vertical teams within the IoT group to spin off winning products, solutions, and services.

The majority of our work includes designing data visualisation solutions that enable performance analysis of industrial infrastructure, sensor data, and fixed / mobile assets.

HERE Technologies

Head of Product Design

With every connected device or sensor capable of generating and sharing its context and location, it is data that will connect this complex new world. The question is how do we make better use of that data and transform it into useful services for people and organisations – all in real-time?

The HERE Open Location Platform is a multi-sided platform: ingesting, processing and analysing data from multiple sources, encoding location-related information for people, places and things as well as deriving relationships between them. The platform provides a rich analytics experience for developers, data scientists and business analysts. These features enable users to harness analytics and machine learning to create new value through location.
