Kate Just is an American-born Australian artist, well known for her knitted and mixed media installations. In works which re-imagine a relationship between historic, cultural or iconographic accounts of femininity and her own autobiographic narratives, Just foregrounds the power and materiality of the body as an identifying site.

In earlier works, Just harnessed knitting's sculptural potential, creating elaborate scenes reimagining Greek and other mythologies from a feminist perspective. Narrating women's transformation out of the limits of their bodies into the shifting ground of nature, these works also metaphorically reflected Just's grappling with the death of her brother, migration to Australia to live with her same sex partner, and embarkation on a long journey toward parenthood. In recent works including evocative resin sculptures and collages of bodily tools, knitted second-skins and armors, and photographs of herself and her daughter, Just elicits the tactility of skin, reframing women's skin, in particular, as a transmissive, receptive, and reparative territory.
